Activities like hillwalking, treadmill walks, backpack walks and trail running improve lung capacity and heart efficiency, reducing fatigue and the risk of altitude sickness. Integrating cardio into your routine is key for a safer, more enjoyable expedition.
Cardio fitness supports both performance and safety during your trek. It enhances oxygen delivery to muscles, allowing longer treks with less fatigue, and reduces the risk of altitude sickness. To get started, begin with a lighter pack and gradually increase the weight as your fitness improves (Use weights or 2L water bottles). Incorporate regular backpack walks into your routine so your body adapts to having a backpack on your body for longer periods of time. This means when on you’re on your expedition your body is already used to the extra weight and you won’t wake up feeling stiff and sore the next day.

5. Weighted Stair Climber
Using the stair climber at your local gym provides substantial cardio benefits crucial for your expedition preparation. The stair climber challenges your cardiovascular and muscular endurance by mimicking the effects of climbing steep inclines, like hiking on the mountains. Adding weights increases resistance, enhancing both aerobic fitness and muscle strength, particularly in the lower body.
